Welcome to the Tramworks
Welcome to the Tramworks, an exciting workspace and creative hub in the heart of Walthamstow, providing office and studio space for small to medium sized businesses. The Tramworks is arranged around a cobbled mews that links nearby Hoe Street with Hatherley Road, a short distance from Walthamstow’s famous street market, and a few minutes’ walk from rail and underground connections via Walthamstow Central Station.
The Tramworks comprises a number of two storey 19th century mews style business units. The buildings, originally used as workshops, have undergone a rolling programme of refurbishment over several years to create attractive office and studio accommodation together with a café and several apartments.
The Tramworks has a long and colourful history. Built in 1882, it has housed a wide range of businesses-from blacksmiths to printers, to mineral water manufacturers, to advertising agencies. It also includes converted stables that once housed horses working for the local tram network.
The Tramworks still shows signs of its past as a tram turnaround. Nearby Hoe street was serviced by horse-drawn trams in the 1880s, operated by the Lea Bridge Road, Leyton and Walthamstow Tramways Co. Horse drawn trams were replaced by an electric service in June 1905, with the last tram service running on July 6th 1952.
In 1909, two Latvian revolutionaries attacked a bank clerk in Tottenham stealing a large amount of money. Following a dramatic chase through Walthamstow, these thieves commandeered a tram with the police and members of the public in hot pursuit. Both men eventually killed themselves after a fatal shootout. The money was never found. The incident became known as the Walthamstow Tram Chase as well as the ‘Tottenham Outrage’.
